How to Host an Outdoor Winter Party

The season is changing and winter weather has arrived, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay inside for the next few months. If you’re like me, winter is my favorite time to be outside. The cold crisp air just does something to me. So if you have the outdoor space, I think an outdoor winter soiree would be a great way to entertain for the season or celebrate Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or any of the other winter holidays. But, there are some pretty obvious concerns when it comes to hosting an event in near freezing temps. So, let’s take a look at what options you have if you want to throw an outdoor winter party.

Heating

This is a total no-brainer, but you’re going to need adequate heating. I refuse to be blamed for someone getting pneumonia or frostbite. So knowing the market for outdoor heating is going to be vital to the success of your winter event. You can start with an electric garden heater which can range in price but is considered a reasonable choice for providing outdoor heat. There are a few other alternatives to using electric heaters, such as gas heaters and an open fire.

All options have their pros and cons. Gas makes people nervous, but as long as you follow all of the safety instructions there shouldn’t be an issue. It is worth noting that gas heaters put off a really high level of heat and have a good range so your guests should be kept warm without standing right next to it. If gas is your preferred option, then bear in mind that you will need to research residential tank sizes to ensure you get what is most appropriate for your area. An open fire is possibly the best option for its ambiance and atmospheric effect, but it will be the most expensive of the three choices. An open fire pit will need proper installation and it may take days to put it together. Also, who’s going to start the fire?

Food & Drink

Once you know guests are going to be warm, you’ll need to make sure they are going to be well fed. You don’t have to go with a traditional holiday theme, you can try something different like winter BBQ. It will seem like a novelty for your guests to be flipping burgers from the grill outside in the middle of winter, but isn’t that sort of the point of holding a party outside at this time of year? Defiance in the face of the cold is only going to be achieved with something your guests are going to enjoy and, everyone loves a BBQ.

Finally, the good stuff! Think about what drinks you’re going to be serving up. The drinks will serve two purposes, help everyone loosen up and the alcohol will keep everyone warm. Come up with a few new drinks to try out, eggnog is okay, but what about some winter cocktails, like a s’mores cocktail with marshmallow vodka. You can even do a hot chocolate/cocoa or coffee bar for non-alcoholic beverages. This unique event is going to be the talk of your social circles, so make sure everyone enjoys a warm cocktail or two to ensure they have a great time.

I would love to know what you all think of an outdoor winter party or if you will be hosting your own holiday soiree!
